Coast to Vines Rail Trail

Thirty-seven flat kilometres from sea to slate

A 37-kilometre sealed rail trail along the old Willunga railway corridor, running from Marino on the coast through the McLaren Vale vineyards and ending on the edge of historic Willunga township.

From the Gulf to the grapes

The Coast to Vines Rail Trail follows the alignment of the former Willunga branch line, closed in 1969, for 37 kilometres between Marino Rocks and Willunga. The southern half of the trail, from Reynella through McLaren Vale to Willunga, passes through rolling vineyards, olive groves and open countryside, making it the most scenic section.

What visitors do

Walkers and cyclists use the trail for everything from a 30-minute stroll to a full day's ride. A popular shorter option is to park at Willunga, ride north to McLaren Vale for coffee and cellar doors along the way, then roll back. The path is mostly flat, family friendly and signposted with trailhead maps. Dogs on leads are welcome.

Practical notes

The Willunga trailhead is on the northern edge of town near St Lukes Reserve, with free parking and interpretive signs. There are no facilities along the trail itself, so carry water. The surface is compacted gravel or bitumen, suitable for hybrid bikes, gravel bikes and prams but not narrow road tyres.
