A dramatic reef break at the western end of Port Elliot, named for the thunderous sound of its crashing waves. A classic South Australian surf spot for experienced riders.
The soundtrack of Port Elliot
Boomer Beach sits at the western end of Port Elliot, just around the headland from Horseshoe Bay. It is named for the deep booming sound its waves make as they break onto the reef and the beach - a sound that carries up into the town on big-swell days.
The surf
Boomer is a serious surf break that works best on a south-southwest swell with a northeasterly offshore wind. On good days the waves are fast, heavy and often close out - experienced surfers describe it as one of the most consistent reef breaks on the Fleurieu coast. Summer is usually flat; winter and early spring deliver the best sessions.
Safety note
This is not a swimming beach. There are no lifeguards, strong rips, shallow rocks and sharks have been sighted in the area. The beach is best enjoyed as a spectacle from the grassed headland or from Commodore Point lookout. Only experienced surfers should paddle out.
Getting there
- Free parking off Rosetta Terrace and along the Esplanade
- Short walk to the beach via a grassy headland with benches and views
- A five-minute walk from the main street of Port Elliot
